What to Bring

Packing up for move-in day? The following list includes everything you need to connect to the internet when you move-in to your residence room.

A Computer, Tablet, or Smart Phone

Nearly any computer, tablet, or smart phone can connect to our wireless and/or wired service. To ensure you have the best experience in the campus technical environment, we recommend that your device meets these recommended minimum specifications:

Processor Intel Core i3/i5 or AMD equivalent (PC or Mac)
Memory (RAM) 6GB
Operating System Windows 10 or macOS 11 or higher

We provide full technical support for:

  • macOS 11 and above
  • Windows 10 and above
  • Android Phones and Tablets
  • iPhones and iPads
  • Chrome OS devices

Please note that distributions of Linux operating systems may not be supported by our staff, but can connect to our services.

If you have any questions about your device specifications, please contact our Hotline at 519-661-4225 or email us at connect-it@uwo.ca.

Anti-virus software

To protect the health of our internet services, all computers must arrive in residence with up-to-date anti-virus software installed and configured to update automatically on a daily basis.

The Campus Tech Hub (located in The Book Store) offers student pricing on anti-virus software for both Windows and macOS computers.

An Ethernet cable

Connect-IT offers two ways to connect to the internet in residence. In order to take advantage of our high-speed wired service, you will need an Ethernet cable. A 15ft Ethernet cable is sufficient. If you forgot your Ethernet cable at home, you can retrieve a complimentary cable at the front desk of your residence building.

If your computer does not have an Ethernet port, you will also need to bring a USB Ethernet adapter. Newer devices may require a USB-A or USB-C Ethernet adapter. You can purchase an adapter at the Campus Tech Hub or online through the MyHousing portal.

A USB printer cable

Wireless printers broadcast signals which interfere with Connect-IT's wireless service. By turning off the wireless broadcasting on your printer, and using a USB printer cable you can ensure that you and your fellow residents can take full advantage of the wireless internet being provided to in your residence building.

What NOT to bring

Wireless Routers

Personal wireless routers broadcast interfering signals continuously and represent a security risk to the Connect-IT internet service. As a result, personal wireless routers are not permitted in residence. If you are having issues with your current wireless connection, please call our Hotline at 519-661-4225 so that we can explore potential solutions.

Smart Home Products

Connect-IT provides a secure wireless service that supports WPA2-Enterprise encryption. Many home networking devices such as Google Homes, Amazon Echo/Dots, and Chromecasts do not support this secure wireless standard and will be unable to connect to our wireless service. We strongly recommend not bringing smart home products with you to residence as they will be unable to connect to our internet service.
